A college build delayed by the collapse of ISG has been revived following the appointment of a new contractor.
West Sussex County Council announced on 6 December that Sunninghill Construction would complete groundworks at Woodlands Meed College.
The overall construction cost will be £21.6m, according to the council.
Sunninghill will begin work at the site in Burgess Hill today (9 December) to prepare for the construction of a new all-weather sports pitch and additional car parking.
The council statement said: “These are required before the main phase-two construction works can begin.”
According to the council, staff and pupils have already moved into the new main building after it was handed over to the school by the council in the summer.
Following the completion of groundworks, main construction in phase two will include a hydrotherapy pool, 12 new classrooms and a two-court sports hall for 100 children with special educational needs and disabilities.
Sunninghill Construction specialises in education, community and leisure sector projects. It has delivered 11 education builds across Sussex and Surrey, the council said.
In accounts published on the Companies House website on 6 December, the contractor revealed turnover of £28.6m and a pre-tax profit of £907,460 for the year to 31 March 2024.
The firm employed a monthly average of 93 staff.
After ISG appointed administrators in September, the council confirmed that it was searching for a replacement contractor.
“We are extremely disappointed at this news and had no prior warning that this was about to happen,” it said in a statement at the time.
Another tendering process is now under way for a fresh contract to do the remaining work.
West Sussex County Council said: “The appointment of a contractor to complete the remaining Phase 2 works is expected to be made in early 2025.
“The council remains committed to ensuring the works are completed as soon as possible and to the highest standard that we, the staff, pupils and parents expect.”
