Tributes have poured in for Sherwoods Motor Group former owner and managing director Alasdair MacConachie OBE who died on Christmas Day at Darlington Memorial Hospital aged 78 following a short illness.
After joining the north east dealership business more than 40 years ago, he went on to become its managing director and full owner, leading a family business culture that persists today.
MacConachie’s dedication to public service and his deep commitment to his community left an indelible mark on the Darlington community with friends, colleagues, and loved ones celebrating a life of service embodying civic duty and compassion.
“His contribution to those who worked with him and people in the local community was enormous,” said the business on its LinkedIn company page
His son and current managing director of Sherwoods Motor Group Simon MacConachie said: “We’re incredibly proud of Dad and all he achieved. His legacy is underlined by the volume of personal tributes and messages we have received over the past few days that show just how many lives he touched. We will all miss him more than words can say.’
Darlington mayor councillor Bob Donoghue described him as “an amazing ambassador for the town,” praising his tireless dedication to local causes and charities.
MacConachie’s influence extended far beyond his business ventures. He served as vice lord-lieutenant of County Durham from 2002 to 2021 and continued as a deputy lord lieutenant until his death.
Among his many roles, he chaired St Teresa’s Hospice, Darlington College, and Darlington Partnership, and served as president of the Darlington Rotary Club. He was also chair of governors at Durham School and played a pivotal role in numerous other organisations.
In recognition of his service, he was awarded an OBE in 2004, served as High Sheriff of Durham in 2009, and was granted the Freedom of Darlington in 2012.
MacConachie is survived by his wife, Val, and two sons, Simon and James.
Sherwoods today operates car sales centres in Gateshead, Durham, Sunderland and Washington and represents Peugeot, Suzuki, Citroen, Isuzu and Maxus.
