The Race to Secure Data in a Quantum World: Tech Developers Lead the Charge

In the banking system, HSBC recently spoke about its preparation for what it calls “Q-Day”, the moment quantum computers can break existing cryptographic algorithms. Research indicates that 27% of experts believe there is a 50% chance of a cryptographically relevant quantum computer (CRQC) being developed by 2033. Anne Neuberger, the White House’s top cyber advisor, recently stated the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is set to release four post-quantum cryptographic algorithms as early as this month. Working behind the scenes are tech developers that are diligently developing solutions to handle the quantum computing threat of the future, including Scope AI Corp. Now Apple has added the new PQ3 protocol into iMessage, as the first widely deployed messaging app to achieve Level 3 security. Unlike traditional encryption methods that could be susceptible to future quantum attacks, PQ3 offers strong protection against even the most advanced threats. By employing cutting-edge cryptographic techniques, PQ3 guarantees that iMessage conversations stay secure and private, no matter how the threat landscape evolves.

“To our knowledge, PQ3 has the strongest security properties of any at-scale messaging protocol in the world,” said Apple’s Security Engineering and Architecture (SEAR) team in a blog post. “iMessage now meets this goal with a new cryptographic protocol that we call PQ3, offering the strongest protection against quantum attacks and becoming the only widely available messaging service to reach Level 3 security.”

A new quantum computer built by Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG, GOOGL) subsidiary Google recently turned heads by instantly executing a task that typically would’ve taken 47 years with normal computing. Numerous experts in the field have lauded Google’s remarkable progress. Steve Brierley, CEO of the Cambridge-based quantum company Riverlane, described Google’s achievement as a “major milestone.”

“Quantum computers hold the promise of executing tasks beyond the capability of classical computers,” said The Google team, in a paper published on the arXiv pre-print server. “We estimate the computational cost against improved classical methods and demonstrate that our experiment is beyond the capabilities of existing classical supercomputers.”

Google’s newest version of its quantum machine, the Sycamore quantum processor, now boasts 70 qubits, a significant increase from the 53 qubits in its earlier version. This enhancement makes the new processor roughly 241 million times more powerful than its predecessor.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company (NYSE: HPE) is also aware of the potential threat of quantum computer hacks in the future. Back in March, HP launched the world’s first business PCs to protect firmware against quantum computer hacks, powered by HP’s upgraded Endpoint Security Controller (ESC) chip to future-proof sensitive data.

According to HP, migrating their entire digital world to a new cryptographic standard is a huge undertaking, highlighting how software can be updated, and hardware can’t. Therefore this includes some of the cryptography that protects PC firmware. With no cryptographic protections in place, no device would be safe – attackers could access and modify the underlying firmware and gain total control.

While HP is introducing this new protection for PC firmware integrity, the company recommends customers start to assess how and when to start migrating all other aspects of their information systems to quantum-resistant cryptography.

As a pioneering force in PKI and certificate management with a strong foothold in contemporary cloud environments, Venafi enhances CyberArk’s offerings.
