Specialist lands facade package on £300m London development

Permasteelisa has landed the facade package on the £300m Salisbury Square development on Fleet Street in the City of London.

The buildings, also known as the Justice Quarter, will serve as a new court and City of London Police headquarters.

Mace is the main contractor on the job, and Keltbray was appointed for complex sub- and superstructure works in April last year.

The facade of the City of London Law Court will feature granite and limestone, and will “represent a contemporary reworking of the historic civic buildings of the Square Mile”, Permasteelisa said in a statement.

The City of London Police Headquarters will feature a weather-resistant, steel and glass facade.

“This will give the building a distinctive colour, which will blend in seamlessly with the brickwork of the adjacent building,” it added.

The specialist’s two main brands – Permasteelisa and Gartner – will both work on the project.

The design and manufacture of the bespoke facade for the London Police HQ will take place at Permasteelisa’s facilities in Italy, and Gartner will develop the exterior of the Law Court building in Germany.

Installation on site is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2025 and complete in September 2026.

Permasteelisa Group chief executive Liam Cummins said: “There is no doubt that the Salisbury Square development will play a leading role in the future of the City of London and we are honoured to have been entrusted to work with Mace on its construction.”

The value of the package has not been disclosed.

Permasteelisa was the UK’s largest envelope specialist between 2018 and 2022, based on revenue. The 2023 edition of the CN Specialists Index was the first time in six years that its turnover failed to outstrip all other companies in the facades market.

In its latest published accounts, for the year to 31 March 2023, the company posted an £11.2m pre-tax loss, citing inflation and the “resolving [of] issues around legacy projects”.

Turnover fell slightly, from £137.6m to £132.8m, in its prior reporting year.

Cummins, a former managing director of Kier Construction, took over as CEO in January 2023.
